Parafffin wax which is still widely used was found in a study from South Carolina State University to emit harmful fumes such as toluene and benzene. These chemicals when inhaled can affect asthmas sufferers, and have been linked to lung cancer. Coconut, rapeseed wax and many plant-based waxes such as soy wax are free from toxic chemicals when burned and therefore way more healthy.

It is from a renewable and high yield crop so less coconuts are used to make a large amount of product. The coconut tree is not impacte4d by the use of coconuts and can last for 60-90 years. Pure soy wax is on a par with coconut and rapeseed wax when used in candles from a health perspective. Soy wax is made from the oil of soybeans which requires a much larger area to grow the beans. There are big question marks about the efficacy of the soy industry in relation to deforestation and ove rintensive farming leading to depletion of soil nutrients.

6. Due to its low melt point, it becomes translucent when burning so is beautiful to look at and more forgiving than other waxes with 'tunnelling effect' (when large amounts of wax is left around the outside of the container when burned.
